Nakshatras

According to Hindu Astrology system Zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatras (Constellations), each extending 13°20' of arc. They are grouped into groups of three and each is ruled by a planet - Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury in that order.

Jyotish or Astrology as we say in English has a heavy reference to Nakshatras and the Vimdhottari Dasha has a total span of 120 years and Mahadasha cycle of various planets viz. Sun-6yrs; Moon-10yrs; Mars-7yrs; Rahu-18yrs; Jupiter-16yrs; Saturn-19yrs; Mercury-17yrs; Ketu-7yrs and Venus-20yrs.

It naturally means that Nakshatras cannot be summarily dismissed as they form the very basis of Mahadasha cycle of planets on which the whole Hindu Astrology is based. My research and experience in the subject extending to more than a decade also vouchsafes for the importance of 'Nakshatras and Raashis'.

Dasha at the time of birth is calculated from the position of Moon at birth. Each constellation, as explained covers 13°20' of arc of 800'. The Moon may occupy any degree or minute in a 'Nakshatra' at epoch. The Ruling Planets of various constellations are as under:
